A Truly Extraordinary Experience.
Despite the pouring rain, nearly 200 walkers and runners (about half of those who registered) braved the elements to participate in the first-ever Providence Heart & Sole Women’s Five Miler on May 11. Mothers, daughters, sisters and best friends laced up their shoes and put on their ponchos in support of this women’s only event!
Thunderstorms forced the walkers to cut short their course, but 114 runners and two wheelchair athletes splashed their way through the full five miles. Though the skies were dark, the smiles were bright as the participants made their way back to Finlay Park. There they were greeted with red roses and treated to some very special refreshments, including chocolate-covered strawberries. Not even the pelting rain could keep participants from enjoying free massages, healthy recipes, blood pressure checks and the merchandise of our expo vendors!
The event attracted several mother-daughter teams, and many first-time 3-mile and 5-mile walkers and runners.
The numerous stories I heard that day from women who had made healthy
lifestyle changes, set personal goals and wanted to do something good for
themselves were both moving and inspiring. The atmosphere really was one
of camaraderie and accomplishment-creating a very memorable experience for
everyone involved.
I can honestly say that I can't wait until next year. Until then, here's to
women and the power of a healthy lifestyle! Keep moving...Jeanna
